Kava Kava, also known as the 'Intoxicating Pepper' , was introduced to Europe by the navigator James Cook during his voyage to the Pacific Ocean in 1768-1771. The plant has played a central role in Polynesian culture for centuries, where it was used in religious ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and at births - in the same way as Yerba Mate in South America.
Description of the plant
Kava Kava belongs to the pepper family (Piperaceae) and is a tall shrub that can grow up to 6 meters. It is known for its heart-shaped, glossy green leaves, white flowers and a fruit with a single seed. The plant grows primarily in western and southwestern Polynesia, but is now also found in New Guinea and Hawaii.
